Escaping the UK Winter: One Man’s Journey to Mortgage-Free Living in the Caribbean
As the UK winter draws in, many of us can’t help but dream of escaping to sunnier climes. For 22-year-old Alex Cassidy, that dream became a reality when he built a one-bedroom house in Tobago for just £3,000.
Tobago’s stunning landscape
Alex, a musician from the Isle of Wight, spent three months building the home on land owned by his stepdad, Derek Sandy. With the help of local tradespeople, he was able to create a cozy one-bed abode that he can call his own.

The best part? Alex now lives mortgage-free, spending just £130 every three months on electricity, water, and wi-fi. It’s a far cry from the UK, where he would have spent upwards of £3,000 to £4,000 just to get electricity set up in a one-bed flat.
Alex enjoying his new home
Alex’s decision to build a home in Tobago was motivated by his desire to escape the UK’s ‘boring’ and ‘miserable’ winters. He spends six months a year in Tobago, where he can soak up the sun and enjoy the island’s vibrant nightlife.

Despite some online critics calling his home a ’tin shed’, Alex loves his new abode. ‘I’d rather live here than a £300k house I have to pay for for 35 years on a mortgage,’ he says. ‘I own this, I never have to pay anyone a cent.’
