Escaping the UK’s Rainy Winters: A 22-Year-Old’s Caribbean Dream Home
As the UK’s winter months approach, many of us can’t help but dream of escaping to sunnier climes. For 22-year-old Alex Cassidy, that dream became a reality when he built his own home in the Caribbean for just £3,000.
Relaxing on the beach
Alex, a musician from the Isle of Wight, spent three months building his one-bedroom home on land owned by his stepfather in Tobago. With the help of local tradespeople, he was able to create a cozy and private space that he can call his own.
“I’ve got my own privacy. I bought my freedom,” Alex said, reflecting on his decision to leave the UK’s rainy winters behind. “It’s such a price difference to the UK. I spent £3,000 to build a whole house and never pay rent.”

Alex’s decision to build his own home in the Caribbean may seem unconventional, but it’s a choice that’s allowed him to live mortgage-free and enjoy a more relaxed pace of life. With utility costs of just £130 every three months, Alex is able to live comfortably on a modest income.
Tobago’s vibrant nightlife
When he’s not relaxing on the beach or enjoying the local nightlife, Alex spends his time playing music with his stepfather, Derek. The two musicians often perform together in the summer months, and Alex is grateful to have found a way to balance his love of music with his desire for a more laid-back lifestyle.

As the cost of living continues to rise in the UK, Alex’s story serves as a reminder that there are alternative paths to homeownership and financial freedom. With a little creativity and determination, it’s possible to create a life that’s truly your own.

In Jersey, however, the picture is very different. The island’s high mortgage rates are driving up the cost of homeownership, making it difficult for many to achieve their dream of owning a home. According to the Jersey Consumer Council, the island’s high savings rates are contributing to the problem, as banks offer higher rates to savers in an attempt to attract inward investment.

The council is calling for greater transparency from mortgage providers and urging the government to consider the impact of high mortgage rates on the island’s residents. As the cost of living continues to rise, it’s clear that something needs to change.

For Alex, the decision to leave the UK behind has been a liberating one. He’s found a way to live life on his own terms, free from the burden of mortgage payments and high utility bills. As he settles into his new life in the Caribbean, he’s grateful for the freedom and flexibility that comes with living mortgage-free.
