Mortgage-Free in the Caribbean: A 22-Year-Old’s Unconventional Solution
Alex Cassidy, a 22-year-old from the UK, has taken an unconventional approach to avoiding the UK’s “boring” and “miserable” winter. Instead of shelling out thousands of pounds on rent or mortgage payments, Alex has built a house in the Caribbean for a mere £3,000.
Tobago’s picturesque landscape
Alex’s decision to build a house in Tobago was influenced by his stepdad, Derek, who owns land on the island. With the help of local labor and some DIY skills, Alex was able to keep costs down and achieve his dream of living mortgage-free.
“I did a lot of the work myself, and labor is a lot cheaper in Tobago,” Alex explained. “Some of the material prices were very similar to the UK, but I was able to save a significant amount by doing things myself.”

Alex’s new home has given him the freedom to split his time between the UK and Tobago. He spends half of the year in each country, enjoying the warm weather and vibrant culture of the Caribbean.
“I’m able to live mortgage-free and enjoy a better quality of life,” Alex said. “It’s definitely worth considering for anyone who’s tired of the UK’s high cost of living.”
